Shaping Structures: The Case for Cast Steel [A5]

Cast iron proved to be a groundbreaking material shortly into the Industrial Revolution, though steel soon largely replaced it, providing great improvement in terms of ductility but replacing much of the artfully creative casting with standardized rolled shapes.

Cast steel, the best of both worlds, is an increasingly effective and attractive option for innovative structural design, as the casting combines the optimal material properties of steel and creative freedom to shape components and direct the flow of forces in complex structures. Join us for a short history of cast steel and an introduction to the material itself. We'll explore some real-world examples of cast steel, such as in slender footbridges and long-span lightweight stadium roofs.
