The 2011 AISC Standard for Steel Bridges [N52]

In 2011, AISC released the new Standard on Steel Bridges that superseded the previous checklists for Simple Bridge and Major Bridge. The new standard provides three options for bridge fabricators based on the types of bridges fabricated: simple bridges, intermediate bridges, and advanced bridges. Why did AISC transition from checklist criteria to standard-base criteria? What are the new elements covered in the standard?
