Unified Design of Steel I-Section Flexural Members in the 2005 AISC and 2007 AASHTO Specifications

The AISC 2009 T.R. Higgins Award Lecture

The 2005 AISC and 2007 AASHTO provisions for flexural design of steel I-section members have been revised in their entirety relative to previous specifications to simplify their logic, organization, and application, simultaneously improving their accuracy and generality. The paper on which this presentation is based provides an overview of these comprehensive developments. Topics of interest include web slenderness, single-symmetry, horizontal curvature, variable web depth, member versus system performance, education, and research. This is the AISC 2009 T.R. Higgins Award Lecture.
