Developing an Eye for Connection Design
Featuring an Audience Driven Curriculum
Are you asking the right questions when designing a connection? Are you properly applying the provisions of the AISC Specification? Want to hone your critical eye for connection details? Then you’re in the right place!
Larry Muir will cover frequently overlooked and misunderstood aspects of connection design--including the aspects that you, specifically, want to know more about.
That's right! YOU will help chart the course for this Night School! Larry Muir will cover important connection design topics, with a focus on questions commonly received by the AISC Steel Solutions Center--and then we’re handing the keys over to you. Participants will decide the topics and questions for roughly a quarter of this Night School course. Got questions you’ve been dying to ask? Now is your chance! Anything related to connection design is fair game. Ask questions you wish you had in the past -- no issue is too big or small!

Sessions
June 22, 2021 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m. EDT
This session will introduce the course. The session will define connections, forces and how forces are transmitted. Then, it will discuss how connection design is based on first principles, without the aid of complex computer models and with little codification. The session will also look at how engineering has changed over the years with the use of computer. The session ends with the application of vigilance to steel design, from the design phase through the review of shop and erection drawings.
June 29, 2021 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m. EDT
This session will focus on the responsibilities, relationships and communication among the various parties involved in the connection design process. It will discuss how delegated connection design is addressed in the AISC Code of Standard Practice. Ways in which proper communication between the engineers can be maintained to ensure the safety of the structure while also addressing concerns about contract management will also be presented. Finally, some general tips for those wishing to perform delegated connection design will be provided.
July 27, 2021 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m. EDT
This session will review Lower and Upper Bound Theorems and look at it from a practical approach: satisfying equilibrium, not exceeding any limit states, and taking measures to ensure ductility. The session will discuss the part strength and stiffness play in applying engineering judgment to connection design. The effect of decisions about force distribution on economy will also be discussed.
August 3, 2021 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m. EDT
The session will cover the basics of bolted connections. The session will address common connection types, design and behavior of bolted connections. Practical suggestions for economical use and standard practices will be presented. This session will also allow for an extended Q&A and requested topics from the audience, collected in advance of the session.
August 10, 2021 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m. EDT
The session will cover the basics of welded connections. This session will consist of a review of applicable welding codes, the basics of welded joints and weld types, and design and behavior of bolted connections. Welded connection details will be discussed. This session will also allow for an extended Q&A and requested topics from the audience, collected in advance of the session.
August 17, 2021 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m. EDT
This session will review design example myths and examine suitability and applicability of specification provisions. Understanding design assumptions, when they are appropriate and when they are a problem will lead to a better understanding of design examples and prevent their misuse.
August 24, 2021 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m. EDT
This session will take a deep dive into extended shear tabs and will draw heavily from a design example. Key design considerations will be reviewed including strength of a bolted connection, block shear patterns, shear lag models, rotational ductility of plate, yield line analysis and shear rupture strength of column web at connection, plate stability check, and more.
August 31, 2021 -- 7:00-8:30 p.m. EDT
You don’t need to bring a casserole or Jell-o salad to attend this session but bring us your questions and suggestions for topics. In advance of the session participants will decide the topics and questions for this session. Anything related to connection design is fair game. This session will address a variety of connection related topics and frequently asked questions.
