One World Trade Center in New York City has been named this year’s Best Tall Building in the Americas by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). The 104-story, 1776-ft steel-framed skyscraper officially opened last November and is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

The award, presented each year to one winner from each of four geographic regions (Americas, Asia and Australasia, Europe and Middle East and Africa), recognizes projects that have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban environment. From the four regional awards, one project will be awarded the honor of overall Best Tall Building “Worldwide,” which will be announced in November. 1WTC also received the 2014 Presidential Award of Excellence in Engineering in AISC’s annual IDEASawards program. For more on the project, see the MSC article “Rising to the Top” (02/2014). MRP, LLC, South Plainfield, N.J., and Banker Steel Company, LLC, Lynchburg, Va. (both AISC Members and AISC Certified fabricators) fabricated the structural steel for the project.
