HDR Pricing Study

Northeast: Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania

DOTs in the Northeast could save a lot of money by constructing steel bridges instead of concrete bridges.

In analyzing in-place data from bridges in the Northeast, HDR found that steel plate girder and rolled steel beam bridges had the lowest overall average cost.

Important notes about data from the Northeast region:

  • New York includes the cost of metalizing some of their steel bridges, which increases the cost. Nonetheless, steel bridges remain cost-competitive.
  • Most DOTs do not require coating weathering steel because it is, for all intents and purposes, already protected from additional corrosion. Michigan prefers to use coated steel bridges, which tends to increase the cost of their steel bridges when compared with uncoated weathering steel bridges.
