    Seven of the leading groups representing the domestic steel industry and labor today urged President Joe Biden to ensure steel tariffs, put in place in 2018 to protect national security, are preserved.

     "Eliminating the steel tariffs now would undermine the viability of [the American steel] industry. Opponents of the steel tariffs argue that they should be eliminated to increase supply, given the current environment of rising prices and long lead times," the groups wrote to President Biden.

This competition is the second to tie into the AISC Education Foundation’s Rex I. Lewis Scholarship Program besides the first that Puma Steel co-owner Lewis himself started five years ago in Wyoming.

    Robert “Bob” Wallace Pyle, Jr., a longtime AISC regional engineer, passed away April 30. He was 65.

    Born in California in 1955, Pyle spent several decades in the construction industry and was a strong advocate for structural steel. In recent years, he had retired in Utah to spend time with his sons and grandson.

    The Steel Erectors Association of America (SEAA) surveyed its members in January to find out which business challenges they face, and a large majority indicated that their biggest challenge is hiring issues. Of the 40% of respondents who cited hiring as the biggest challenge, 37% of them believe hiring will continue to present a problem over the next three years.

    Helmut Jahn, a German-American architect known for his use of structural steel in designing several of Chicago’s modernist landmarks as well as iconic buildings around the world, died Saturday at the age of 81.

    “The sad news of his death has included many reminders of his prolific influence on architecture and society. So many of his ideas were built by our industry and we mourn his loss as we celebrate his legacy," AISC president Charlie Carter said.

    The new structural steel Wellsburg Bridge connecting Brooke County, W.V.’s Route 2 and Brilliant, Ohio’s Route 7 over the Ohio River was lifted into place last month after being  transported to the site via barge--and the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) live-streamed the entire trip.

    A free one-hour webinar will explore sustainable steel options for replacing America’s aging bridge infrastructure, which President Biden has identified as a top national priority. 

    The webinar, “Building a Sustainable Infrastructure with Short Span Steel Bridges,” will be presented by three industry experts and held on Tuesday, May 11, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. EST. It will be hosted by the Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance (SSSBA), American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), and American Galvanizers Association (AGA).
