Collaborating with the steel industry to enhance research and teaching

Amit Kanvinde will present on working with AISC to develop a successful and impactful research program. While the talk will be directed at early to mid-career researchers interested in developing a research program focused on structural steel, seasoned researchers will walk away with tips for mentoring junior faculty. The session will discuss experiences and strategies for writing successful research proposals to AISC and developing a long-term research vision that aligns with the mission of the Institute while impacting the professional practice. Specific topics will include: (1) the mission of the Institute, (2) the process of standards/guidelines development, tasks committees, and its relation to scientific research, (3) the importance of professional and research collaborations, (4) the mechanics of the funding process, including securing fabricator support, and (5) ultimately translating the research into professional impact.

After the presentation, Dr. Kanvinde will join a panel discussion with fellow educator, Will Collins, as well as design engineer, Mara Brasleteon, and fabricator, Casey Brown. They will share their perspectives on how educators can best collaborate with the steel industry to produce impactful research, enhance their methods for teaching steel design, and graduate well-prepared students.

Christina Harber, SE, PE, Senior Director of Education at AISC
Amit Kanvinde, Professor at UC Davis

 STUDENTS CONNECTING WITH INDUSTRY SESSIONS

Students are invited to join us for the Students Connecting with Industry Sessions (SCIS) on Thursday, March 21. These sessions are exclusively for students. Take advantage of this great opportunity to learn about the structural steel industry, hear about potential career paths, and network with design professionals. See below for the session descriptions; we will post more specific details closer to the conference.

Note: Registration for NASCC: The Steel Conference is free for AISC student members. If you are not already an AISC student member, you can apply here (it’s also free!).

Career Insights
Students will have the opportunity to hear career insights from two distinguished design professionals. This two-part session will provide upcoming graduates with unique perspectives on the professional world they will soon enter. Students attending the SCIS Career Insights session will receive a complimentary lunch.

Direct Connect
Ever wish you could grab a cup of coffee with the top designers of the leading architecture, engineering, and construction firms? At this event, students will have the opportunity to connect and interact with leading industry experts from design and construction companies around North America in a relaxed setting. While not all firms at this event may be hiring, this is a great opportunity to meet significant designers and make key contacts at major firms.

Students who attend the NASCC Students Connecting with Industry Sessions (SCIS) will receive a $175 stipend, and are not required to submit receipts. Additionally, AISC student members who attend SCIS can be eligible to join us at the conference dinner. Tickets are distributed upon the close of SCIS. Registration is required for these complimentary student sessions.
