Engineering Educator Workshop

Teaching Steel Design: Fundamentals of Behavior in a System Context

Keep an eye out for details on the next Engineering Educator Workshop in 2025!

Learn how to help your students connect the dots between the Specification and the design of a steel-framed building. Get ideas for hands-on demonstrations and activities to aid in the visualization of system and component behavior and to help students understand the “why” behind the equations. Hear how others have integrated full-building case studies into their courses to reinforce important concepts for component and system behavior and design. Implement these and other workshop tools in any steel course.

This hands-on workshop will also provide information on course planning, AISC resources, textbooks, techniques for teaching behavior, maximizing student engagement, and teaching stability concepts. Plenty of time will be allotted for discussion and exchange of ideas and we’ll take a local field trip to learn more about the steel industry and steel construction. This workshop is intended for those new to teaching steel design (less than seven years of experience). Other experience levels will be considered based on capacity.

Our workshop facilitators are experienced educators who have been involved with AISC education, research, and specification work for many years and are enthusiastic about sharing their experiences with you.

Travel Assistance

There is no charge to attend the workshop. AISC offers complimentary lodging and up to $800 in travel assistance to all faculty members attending the workshop in the form of an “Advancing Structural Steel Education” Award. In order to qualify for the award and reimbursement, the attendee must complete pre-workshop assignments (e.g., submit sample course syllabi, prepare success story / challenge) and be present for the entire duration of the workshop. Attendees who arrive late or leave early will not be eligible for the award.
