William A. Thornton, PhD, PE, NAE, is Corporate Consultant and Vice President for Cives Engineering Corporation of Roswell, Ga. He was formerly President of this organization where he was responsible for all structural design performed by Cives Engineering and a consultant to the six divisions of Cives Steel Company in matters relating to welding, quality assurance, connection design, and fabrication practices. Thornton has 58 years of experience in teaching, research, consulting, and practice in the area of structural analysis and design, is currently registered as a Professional Engineer in 3 states, and was formerly registered in 34 states and the District of Columbia.  He is the winner of the AISC 1995 T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award, the 2003 AISC Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2004 Craftsmanship Award of the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New York, and was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 2013. He has served as an invited lecturer numerous times at AISC, Structural Engineering Association, and Cives Corporation sponsored seminars and webinars on connection design.  He is the author or co-author of over 70 published papers in connection design and related structural areas. A member of ASCE, AWS and Research Council on Structural Connections (RCSC), he currently serves as a member of technical committees of AISC and RCSC, and was Chairman of the AISC Committee on Manuals and Textbooks for 26 years, from 1985 to 2011.
